Stranger Things - Case Study
The Story of Stranger Things:
- The story begins in 1983, in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.
- Like Steven Hawkins who was very interested in universes and alternate universe
- We meet a group of kids: Mike (leader, middle-class, spoiled), Dustin (geeky, hasn't fully grown up), Lucas (black, sporty, argumentized relationship with Dustin) and will (sensitive, outsider, lower-class).
- Demogorgon = Donald trump, Will (Gay, quiet, lower-class) and then Barb (Doesn't fit women's stereotypes). The outsiders are taken.
- Will Byers goes missing while riding his bike home.
- In search of Will, his friends discover a mysterious girl - First time talking to girls and before, now there is a bit of tension in their friend group.
- The girl has a buzzed haircut and is known only by Eleven. - Not gender stereotyped and very dehumanised.
- Judith Butler - intrigued by gender (different from sex)
- When people don't fit the norms of attraction/gender you can have gender trouble (Eleven/Will)
- You learn it and present it yourself. (Boys like blue and football etc)
- Gender is a socially learned idea that describes you as a girl or boy. Strange occurrences start taking place in Hawkins. (The government is making these things happen and ruining peoples lives by listening through phones etc. Links to trump.)
- The police begin a search for Will lead by Chief Jim Hopper. (Police interact badly with the government. They are good guys.)
- Joyce, Will's mother, becomes desperate to find her son. (The actress is from the 80's so she will be perfect for the role)
- We learn about a secret government lab conducting experiments.
- Will's brother, Jonathan, tries to uncover the truth about Will's disappearance. (He is similar to his brother and helps to find him. He is skilled in photography ad seen as a outsider. He uses this to try help find his brother.)
